I have been Coaching for 10 years now and have approx have had more than 200 people in the chair(s) in front of me. A lot of patterns emerge slowly but surely. It strikes me more and more that the lack of responsibility is the core of the many pains in peoples lives. It is a general human condition to shy away from walking the road with open eyes.

When you have a problem – this may be love, health, money, career etc. You want to be done with it. And get to the finish line. And that is exactly why you still struggle with the same problems.

Six years ago
I took a very courageous decision to move to another country and start a new company with little preparation or thought. Back then I found my self to be very strong and courageous. I simply took the jump with both feet so to speak.

That “courageous decision” cost me a whole year of hurt and no pay for a whole year. In the end I succeeded and the company lived. Later I understood that my decision and action was not courageous – it was absolutely in the lack of courage. It was a blind decision. I just took a wild decision and took no responsibility.

AND that is exactly what so many people do; especially with love. They just make the jump and hope for the best.

It is all about the inches – and walking the road with open eyes.
Trick is to win one inch at the time – and do it with open eyes. You make a small progress all the time and never have any taboos or anything that you don’t want to look at. Courage is to stay with your emotions; say them out loud – and win yourself over step by step.

That is how you make progress and take ownership. This is how you create real and lasting progress. One inch at the time.

In the movie Any Given Sunday; Al Pacino gives this legendary speech. (It is originally not made for this movie; but he does it so very well. Very American, I know… forgive me for posting this).

Hell = The ego world as it is.
Inch = Authentic moment
Team = You and the universe.
A guy = God.

Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past ten years studying vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame.

Understanding
Your whole system is created to keep you from feeling pain. That is why your mind is always busy watching TV, worrying, thinking or busy working all the time. That is the simple explanation as to why we have an Ego.

The Ego is only created to numb out emotional pain.

When you don’t accept and feel your emotional pain – you shut down all the other emotions such as joy, gratefulness, creativity and so much more. When you accept and feel through your emotions you will so grow as a human being – and purpose and love can find you – and you can start to be happy and fulfilled again. Simple huh?

I would still have been the same old scared “cool” guy and would have been playing a very small and safe game – had it not been for all those who believed in me. From my first mentor who believed in me and thought that I could do good. To all of those who had faith in me and still have.

And to my current mentor and friend who believes in me so much that I am starting to truly believe in me.

Below are parts of e-mails I received from my friends and family more than a year ago. The amount of support I got from them made all the difference.

TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

TED is such a wonderful idea – that we are able to get inspired by some of the greatest people in our time. For the first time in history we have access to so much knowledge. Think about it. It is BIG.

An authentic place
And so was the name of an enchanting restaurant at the new Rambla in Barcelona. During a magical time in my life we visited this restaurant where the owner, a big tattooed happy fellow, was behind all the pots and pans greeting all new arrivals to his place.

His restaurant was filled with life and love – and on the wall was the poem of La Reina. People loved his place and there was always lots of hungry restaurant goers. It was real and it had soul.

When I visited the restaurant just three weeks ago it had been taking over by somebody else who forgot everything about the soul and energy of places. It was pretty, lifeless and boring. It had turned into a money thing. And it had very little success.

If only the business world knew that the love and energy you put into things and places makes the whole difference.

And here is a thought;
When people go out at night they spend so much time on fixing themselves up and/ or buying expensive cool clothing – when what makes you really attractive is the love and energy that you carry yourselves with. True?

Best advice ever

When I was about 14 we started listening to a lot of hiphop and rap music – and hence LA and all the gang movies about the bloods and crips were all so interesting. We chose to be pro blood – mostly because we could make the hand signals for blood.

Anyways. One day we went to see this new movie Colors with Robert Duvall and Sean Penn (Ice T made the title song); we were some very cool small white boys.

Robert Duvall is telling this story about the two bulls sitting on a grassy knoll. And a part from the maybe obscene language (of cows, fuck and bulls), and even though I have read so many books about mindfulness, Coaching, psychology, mediation, ways of life, leadership, zen and many many more. This has proven to be the best advice ever.

Your mind always want to fix things to get what you want now. And that is why you loose and don’t get it. Instead of jumping ahead and being too ambitious; walk down and win.

Apply this advice to just about anything in your life ranging from love life, loosing weight, finding your passion, being successful or creating your masterpiece.

Gaudi

Last week we were in Barcelona and we went to see the masterpiece of Gaudi, La Sagrada Familia. If you visit this place you will experience firsthand what I am talking about, Authenticity, presence, trusting in your intuition. That church was not build from his head. No way that this could ever have been created from the mind.

A small story that you can read in the museum underneath is that Gaudi were sick growing up. So he spent a lot of his early childhood alone in nature. My take on it is that he connected to nature and silenced his mind so that something bigger and more beautiful could emerge through him.

Lesson learned no. 3 – part II

I felt so ashamed when I had this incident with the homeless guy. Something that I throw away and had no value to me. But to him it was different – very different.

There is something really wrong with our world. That total lack of equality that is in our society. For instance; on the beach of Barcelona they have a special VIP get together every Sunday night with super rich people that spend thousands and thousands on drinks and party just to look a little better; while other people just around the corner fights for survival, for something simple to eat.

Or in Russia where people live in the worst kind of slum just next to almost a city of gold; a place of total decadence. Something must change.

A small Zen story

(As I remember it).

Two monks were walking in the mountains. They were on their way to the monastery.

They came across a young woman with a lovely silken gown by a river. She couldn’t get across without ruining her gown. So without further ado one of the monks picked her up and carried her across the river.

The monks continued their trek through the mountains and by nightfall when they made camp for the night the younger monk finally broke their silence.

“Master, why did you carry that woman across – you know we are not allowed to touch women?”

The other monk answered “I carried her for some short moments. You have been carrying her for many hours.”
